The closure of the Ramada by Wyndham hotel in Tampico has been confirmed, generating concern among the hotel sector in southern Tamaulipas, as it represents the loss of 124 rooms in a key tourist area: the Historic Center.
The president of the Southern Tamaulipas Hotel Association, Sergio Jorge Marón Ceja, lamented the operating group’s decision, considering it a significant reduction in lodging options, especially in a strategic location near Plaza de la Libertad.
He explained that one of the factors that likely influenced the closure was the low occupancy rate recorded in the first months of the year, including the recent Holy Week season, where levels were below those reached in 2015. He noted that weekday occupancy was particularly low.
Marón Ceja detailed that, in addition to the decrease in demand, there are internal factors related to the operation of the property and the relationship with the owners, as well as the high costs involved in maintaining a hotel brand of this caliber.
The hotel, formerly known as Misión Express, will officially close on April 30th, and the property is expected to be put up for sale. Its closure will leave approximately 30 employees without work.
The hotel representative expressed concern about the downward trend in occupancy, noting that during Holy Week, figures were lower than last year, with an overall drop of six percentage points, while during Easter Week the decline was even greater, reaching 11 points.
Finally, he expressed hope that similar closures would not occur in the region, although he acknowledged that the outlook remains challenging for the sector.
