New violence erupted across the Rio Grande after a cartel boss was captured in Reynosa

On Monday, April 27, 2026, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning urging Americans not to travel to the border city of Reynosa, citing an uptick in violence and highway roadblocks.

The U.S. State Department is warning Americans to avoid travel to Reynosa — the large Mexican city located directly across the Rio Grande from McAllen — after the capture of a major cartel boss near Puerto Vallarta.

The State Department has issued a Level 4 travel warning for the Mexican state of Tamaulipas and the city of Reynosa, in particular, citing an increase in terrorism, crime, and kidnapping. On Monday, April 27th, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico further announced that the consulate in Matamoros had received “reports of violent criminal activity, including roadblocks in Reynosa.”

The heightened travel warning comes just hours after the Mexican military captured one of the highest-ranking leaders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) — one with a $5 million bounty on his head — in a small town outside of the popular Mexican tourist destination, Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
