Tourism in southern Tamaulipas continues to drive private investment focused on developing lodging options and rental properties for weekends or vacations.

For this reason, several investment plans for hotels and residential towers for vacation rentals are in the pipeline in Tampico, Madero, and Altamira, with progress expected by 2026.

How many hotels operate in southern Tamaulipas?

“Growth is projected for next year in this sector in southern Tamaulipas,” stated Jorge Marón Ceja, president of the Hotel Association.

Examples include the Marriott Hotel in Altamira, which is under construction, and the Fiesta Americana in Tampico, an investment by Grupo Posadas.

“These are much-needed investments in hotels for the city and job creation because we don’t have five-star hotels in the area. Although some hotels advertise themselves as such, the reality is that we don’t have that level of quality here, and of course, it’s wonderful to add this product, which would give the region an extra distinction,” she said.

The hotel offering in southern Tamaulipas is good, but it has room to grow. In Tampico alone, there are 153 hotels, Ciudad Madero has 98, and Altamira has 31. Statewide, there are 1,037 hotels in operation with 28,000 rooms.

According to Yasmin Santiago, director of economic development for Ciudad Madero, the area is a very attractive destination for private investment in tourism. A new hotel, “Antonios,” recently opened on Miramar Beach, located on the coastal boulevard.

She noted that there will likely be greater progress in investment projects at Miramar Beach in 2026, given the improved cleanliness, order, and stability, as well as increased promotion and the several apartment towers currently under construction, which complement the existing tourism offerings.

“We have 450 rooms available for locals and tourists, and we appreciate the increase in available rooms to continue promoting the area. We know we are one of the favorite vacation destinations for tourists from Nuevo León,” stated Yasmin Santiago, Director of Economic Development for Ciudad Madero.
