It is reported that the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) and the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) have handed over Carlos Eugenio Benítez Orta—an ANAM employee detained in the United States—to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
Both agencies noted that the official was wanted in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged organized crime activities.
They announced via a joint statement that Benítez Orta had been detained by U.S. authorities.
He was subsequently handed over to the SSPC, the FGR’s Criminal Investigation Agency, and ANAM at the Matamoros International Bridge—known as “Puerta México”—where an arrest warrant for organized crime was executed.
They further indicated that the necessary proceedings would be carried out to clarify the facts and, where applicable, determine liability in accordance with the law.
For its part, the National Customs Agency of Mexico stated that it is cooperating with the authorities in compliance with the current legal framework.
Following his capture, he was transferred to Federal Social Readaptation Center (Cefereso) No. 1, “Altiplano,” in the State of Mexico.
