A camera captured the moment in which a group of armed individuals maintain a confrontation in an area of Tamaulipas where the presence of the Gulf Cartel, a criminal structure that has various factions, has been registered.
Through his X account, Lieutenant Chris Olivarez shared recordings that show part of the violence in Texas and also in Río Bravo, Tamaulipas. In the images you can see the actions of several armed individuals in the area.
Although the material was shared on Thursday, October 24, the events captured were recorded a day before. A first video shows a group of individuals near a vehicle. The images continue with men inside two vehicles parked in parallel, who also use weapons.
Apparently they would be members of the Gulf Cartel
“For decades, the Gulf Cartel has maintained control of the area, but there has been an ongoing battle between factions of the Gulf Cartel for control of drug and human trafficking routes,” Olivarez wrote.
The factions of the Gulf Cartel
The criminal group Gulf Cartel has several factions, including Los Escorpiones and Los Ciclones. In 2021, they indicated that these structures had formed an alliance with the aim of seizing territory, Irving Barrios Mojica, prosecutor of Tamaulipas.
“From the various lines of investigation, the social destabilization in a sector of the municipality of Reynosa, by the different factions of the Gulf Cartel, known as Ciclones and Escorpiones, based in Matamoros and Río Bravo, becomes relevant,” said Barrios Mojica.
The Gulf Cartel has several factions
The above would have the objective of combating another of the factions, which is called Los Metros.
However, some things have changed within the criminal structure, since last January José Alberto, alias La Kena, was captured, identified as a criminal leader linked to Los Ciclones. While months later, last July, Antonio Guadalupe, alias El Escorpión 17, was arrested and identified by the National Guard as the leader of the Ciclones and Grupo Escorpión factions.
While on the map of criminal organizations that appears in the document Security Strategy for the First 100 Days, the Gulf Cartel appears to have a presence in Tamaulipas, as well as in San Luis Potosí. This document was published by the State Commission on Human Rights (CEDH) of Michoacán to show the axes of security at the beginning of the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
