More than 3,000 children and adolescents born in the United States have obtained dual citizenship through a program promoted by the Tamaulipas Institute for Migrants (ITM), reported its director, Juan José Rodríguez Alvarado.
The official explained that another 1,000 minors are currently in the process of obtaining this benefit, which allows them to fully exercise their rights in both Mexico and the United States.
He indicated that, according to estimates from INEGI (the National Institute of Statistics and Geography), there are more than 30,000 minors in Tamaulipas in this situation who have not yet regularized their legal status.
Rodríguez Alvarado pointed out that completing this process privately can cost families between 30,000 and 50,000 pesos, which is why many have postponed the procedure.
He specified that, at the instruction of the State Government, the ITM offers this support free of charge through its six branches, in addition to providing assistance in obtaining U.S. passports for the minors.
She emphasized that not having dual citizenship can limit children’s access to educational programs, scholarships, health services, and other rights, both in Mexico and the United States.
Therefore, she invited parents of children born abroad to visit the Institute’s offices for guidance and to begin the necessary process free of charge.
