This plan is intended to reduce, reuse and recycle materials so as not to use single-use plastics, which translates into an effort to stop polluting
The Magical Town of Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, announced a new stage of the “Zero Plastics: I think, then I recycle” campaign, which has the purpose of rescuing Lake Pátzcuaro, after the last September 30 was prohibited in the municipality use of bags, straws, plates, containers, packaging and Styrofoam derivatives.
Víctor Manuel Báez Ceja, Mayor of Pátzcuaro, announced that with this plan, the first of its kind in a Magical Town, it is intended to reduce, reuse and recycle materials so as not to use single-use plastics, with which they make an effort permanent awareness to stop polluting.
He recalled that according to the United Nations, each year around 13 million tons of plastic waste reach water bodies, which in addition to being observed on the surface saturates the bottoms and columns where a great diversity of species lives.
The municipal president indicated that the Regulation for the Management and Integral Management of Solid Waste of Pátzcuaro, approved in 2019, during his tenure, has among its main objectives, guaranteeing the right of everyone to live in an environment suitable for their development and wellness.
“We want to adopt habits and behaviors that respect the environment, we want citizens to have an education based on practice and where the environmental problems associated with single-use plastics are known,” he stressed.
In this regard, Raquel Briseño Dueñas, a researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology of the UNAM, highlighted that plastics affect more and more marine species: birds, mammals, fish, turtles, and corals, among others, and when they decompose they become in small particles, microplastics, which are ingested by zooplankton, the vector through which they reach humans.
The deterioration of Lake Pátzcuaro is due to the generation of garbage, mainly plastic waste, which due to saturation represents health risks and damage to ecosystems, in addition to causing plugs in drains and sewers.
